Before we started the project, a large wooden box took up the entire backyard, filled with a 6 inch-deep layer of wood chips presumably for a long-gone swingset. Besides being unattractive, it was wasted space — especially when this plant lover needed every possible inch for plants.

The elevated patio was great for entertaining, but it felt disconnected with the lower level.
